QuickFeet June 2024
Our 5-minute update on Hoa Motuhake Sports Trust June 2024
Name change
In late October we received the blessing of Mana whenua to transition our name to the te-reo māori version. ‘Hoa’ meaning friend, companion, mate. ‘Motuhake’ meaning special or distinct. When we put the words together, we are describing a beautiful relationship with a friend that is special. That is what our mentors are with their mentees. They are always striving to represent that through their special bond and connection of sport.
Crusaders game
We were fortunate enough to receive 100 free tickets from the Crusaders for their game vs Moana Pasifika! What an awesome evening it turned out to be, creating lasting memories for our tamariki and their whānau. The tamariki were also lucky enough to be the guard of honour for players as they ran back out after halftime.
Sponsor a Child campaign
We are very excited to be launching our Sponsor a Child campaign, dedicated to giving our tamariki the support to continually experience the benefits of sport and recreation. Sponsoring means that each child will have the funding for the Sports Mentoring Program, Scholarship Program, fees, equipment, and transport. It’s about the long game. With early intervention, we can break the cycle of trauma & adversity, offering our tamariki a brighter more positive future.
$20 a week means tamariki can participate in as many activities as possible. With the flow on effect of this being that tamariki are introduced to new mentors through coaches, teammates, and clubs. These relationships and support can last well into their teens and adult years.
We are 30 sponsors away from our target of 50! We encourage you to share our campaign with your networks. It doesn’t matter who sponsors too, for example it could be a workplace, a sports team, or even a household. Thank you to those who have already chosen to sponsor and support our tamariki. Sponsor a child today!
Christmas party
In early December we held our annual Christmas Party, hosting 76 tamariki, mentors, and whānau. It was a fun filled day full of games, delicious food, and a special visit from the man in red. We’re grateful for the incredible community we’ve built that helped us continue the special tradition.
Game Day stats
77: Tamariki supported to date.
3607: Individual sporting sessions for tamariki.
44: Playing community sport.
69: Group sessions run involving over 40 different sports.
Celebrating future champions
At the end of 2023 we were able to celebrate our first Canterbury representative! Waha was selected for the Canterbury Black under 12 team, who played tournaments in Nelson and Christchurch. This is Waha’s third year in the program after being matched in 2021 with his mentor Matt. During the mentoring year it was very clear that Waha instantly had an interest in rugby and was subsequently enrolled in Tamai Sports with Matt being his coach. Since then, he has been able to try out basketball, rugby, rugby league, and touch. Matt has stayed involved and plays a part in getting him to his rugby games each week. We are excited to continually support our superstar and can’t wait to see what the future holds for him.
Thank you!
We want to finish by saying thank you to everyone who has been involved with the trust over the last 6-months. Whether it is coaching, mentoring, funding, supporting, or even spreading awareness of us. Through the power of sport, we are seeing day in day out the impact of our work. Happy and healthy tamariki means a healthier community for all of us.
